As a teenager in Cleveland, Oh., I spent many hours drawing pictures and enjoying the exhibits in the Cleveland Museum of Art. When I became an adult, one of the cities that I lived in was Philadelphia, Pa. There, I attended classes at the Philadelphia College of Art. After moving to Florida, I enrolled in Polk Community College and attended additional art courses. I continue to extract knowledge from what ever sources I have access to, for example, books, computer and galleries. Recently, I have taken online art courses in an effort to gain more understanding of the principles of making art.

I believe an artist is born with an innate ability to create. Creativity cannot be taught. An artist is one who has the ability to connect with the inner self and express the language of the soul, using the medium of choice. For me, art education is necessary to help learn how to bring about that expression to the best of my ability.

My paintings do not represent any social statements or have any hidden meanings. The motivating factors are to produce art that is heart felt, represents my personality and employ the principles of art to create works that are emotive and aesthetically pleasing. The style of art that interests me is abstract or non- representational art, although skies and flowers will appear in some paintings. The medium of choice is acrylic which is applied onto canvas or masonite. Acrylic appeals to me because of its fast drying nature. Many layers, textures or effects can be achieved in a short period of time allowing the creative process to flow without long interruptions. For many years, I did not want to show my art publicly as I shunned the sting of criticism. Recently, I have gained a new courage and will display my work whenever I get the opportunity. - Ronald Fields
