The associations which I am evoking in my paintings are pre-verbal -- closer to the way one thinks when daydreaming. Painting is itself a contemplative activity which takes me into psychological spaces that are difficult to reach. The paintings are a record of that journey.

My approach in the studio is conceptual. I work with models in staged settings, occasionally allowing a collaboration between my own intentions and the character of the model. I often integrate landscapes whose geometry and poetic associations speak to me.

I have no interest in a fixed storyline because it would obscure the relationships and ambiguities in the work. Rather, the viewer is provided with a space through which to wander while making personal connections. Rima Jabbur
