To
give a reference point to my work, I would like for the viewer to
think of some of the following which I believe have been influences:
Travels in India, Thailand, and Mexico
Shrines are important in these cultures. They reflect the spiritual
beliefs and aspirations of the people. Often decorated with flowers
(plastic and real), candles, cigarettes, liquor and other objects
selected to give homage to the particular honored one, they are reminders
in everyday life to pay attention to the spiritual.
Reliquaries
In most religions, one finds containers which house something of value,
warranting reverence. These may be the bone of a saint, a piece or
fabric from a saint's garment, or a piece of the true cross. Great
care is taken to make the "casket" an object of beauty to honor that
which is held within.
Armors
Historically, armors have been thought of as garments of warfare.
My armors are to fend off enemies of a more subtle nature. They are
considered "healing" armors, created to make us aware of the fragility
of life and to instill a consciousness of ways of healthful living
in its fullest dimensions.
Flowers
Flowers have been a recurring motif in my work - the collaged flower,
the plastic flower, the painted flower. As we look around at the designed
world, Medieval armor, textiles, ceramics, tiles, etc. one sees how
the flower has been a symbol used throughout history. Que
