Since the age of 12, Joan Wahl wanted to be a performing artist and painter. Her colorful abstracts, many of Spanish dancers, filled her parents home as a teen. Picasso was her idol and she continued to paint while teaching and raising her family.

In 1972, while showing her work at the Winter Park Art Festival, Florida, she came up with the creative idea for a magazine called Sunshine Artist. For 20 years she ran the publication with her late husband Crusty Sy.

Joan paints in several medias from abstract to realistic images, and enjoys teaching at area arts and crafts stores as well as private classes.

She has exhibited her work at the Maitland Art Center, offices, galleries and theatre space. Most recently, her work appears in the January 2005 issue of Orlando Magazine.
